As the festival of Eid-al-Fitr is celebrated this week by NZ Muslims to mark the end of the month of Ramadan, many more of us look back grateful to have been given the opportunity to be closely aware of this precious month of fasting, prayer and sharing hospitality.
The invitations to join Muslim community and families as they broke their fast with the evening Iftar meal have meant many of us have shared this time of outreach and warmth, the occasion to review and strengthen relationships with family, friends and the wider community.
Overshadowed by the terrorist attack of 15 March 2019 the Muslim leadership and communities have continued to respond to the public outpouring of compassion and kindness with grace and spiritual depth.
A group of creative young Muslims have in fact made a video – they want as many people as possible to know that they are thanking New Zealanders for their response of grace, compassion and humanity in the immediate aftermath of the Christchurch terrorist attack.
‘People in New Zealand actually cared about us!’ “It has made me feel safe’.
